Ok, have I got your total attention? Some of you are thinking, yeah, finally someone gave me an out. For some yes, but many no, I haven’t. Before you cut out any food group it is essential to investigate the cause in case there is something sinister that is treatable before things gets too bad. Cut plants foods out too early, and you are heading for disaster in the long run.
See fruit, vegetables and whole grains are excellent foods to regularly include in your eating pattern. They provide nutrients or building blocks, phytonutrients to protect against ageing, inflammation and disease, and fibre which feeds the gut cells, keeps the bowel clean, provides space for wastes to be removed from the body, and stimulates the immune and nerves system, for good. This is why we still encourage 2 fruit, 5 veg and 6 grains serves a day for the majority.
Food intolerances, Mental Health and gut issues in Australia are increasing. Increased awareness, diagnostics and people experimenting with their food choices are contributing factors. Symptoms linked back to salicylates, amines and glutamates; for some the amount & type of fibres; minerals oxalates, sulphates and for many bug imbalance include extreme fatigue, unexplained tiredness; chronic gastric reactions, severe bloating, IBS; hives eczema, psoriasis; chronic rhinitis, hay fever and asthma like reactions; headaches, migraines, arthritis, joint and muscle aches and pains, and this is the short list. There is a potential link to long term complications including some inflammatory auto-immune diseases if food sensitivities and imbalances are not corrected. Currently there isn’t any clear tests for these, and so an experienced eye, patience and testing of reactions is what is needed. A jigsaw puzzled for sure.
